Human bioaerosols contribute significantly to indoor air quality. This study used a Wideband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor (WIBS-4A) instrument for real-time measurement of particle size distribution and count to differentiate fluorescent bioaerosols from non-fluorescent aerosols. Through an experiment involving 12 subjects (six men and six women) wearing standard cotton clothing in a 2 m × 2 m × 2 m environmental chamber, we established a quantitative method to obtain the bioaerosol emission rate of a single subject, aiming to explore the effects of masks and sex on bioaerosol emissions from different individuals. The mean emission rates of fluorescent bioaerosols in the particle size ranges of 0.5-2.5 μm and 2.5-10 μm were 3.192±2.11×10 4 counts/(person·h) and 13.98±9.34×10 4 counts/(person·h), respectively. A comparison between those wearing and not wearing masks revealed no significant differences in the emissions of fluorescent bioaerosols. This suggests respiratory sources may not significantly impact the emissions of fluorescent bioaerosols from individuals under seated breathing conditions. Significant disparities in the fluorescent bioaerosol emission rates of different biological sexes were observed through independent sample analysis. Males exhibited 41 % and 15 % higher emission rates than females for particle size ranges of 0.5-2.5 μm and 2.5-10 μm, respectively, possibly because of different metabolic rates. A significant correlation between metabolic rates and fluorescent bioaerosols (sig = 0.044 < 0.05) was observed in all the subjects. These findings underscore the individual variations that affect bioaerosol emission rates. The increasing application of nanotechnology has resulted in a growing number of nano-enabled consumer products, and they could be important contributors to indoor particulate matter, with potential adverse health effects. This study investigated the exposure of adults and children to the released and resuspended manufactured particles from seven nano-enabled consumer sprays. Sedimentation and resuspension of released particles were investigated in a newly constructed 2.8 × 1.6 × 2.4 m 3 chamber. The resuspension of deposited particles was investigated as a function of product type, flooring material (e.g., carpet and vinyl), resuspension force (e.g., walking by an adult and motion of a robotic sampler that simulated a child), and measurement height. The concentration of released and resuspended particles in the air was determined using Button Aerosol Samplers (SKC Inc.) with 25-mm 2 μm-pore PTFE filters. Samplers were positioned in the experimenter's breathing zone (e.g., 1.5 m for adults and 0.3 m for a child-simulating robot) and at fixed stations of 0.3 m and 1.1 m heights. Resuspended particle mass concentrations ranged from 28 to 905 μg/m 3 , and the resuspension rates of deposited spray particles for the same variable combinations varied from 10 -4 to 10 -1  h -1 , depending on product type, flooring material, sampling height, and resuspension force. Particle resuspension rates from carpet were up to 320 % higher than resuspension rates from vinyl flooring, resuspension rates measured at 0.3 m were up to 195 % higher than the rates measured with a 1.1 m stationary sampler, and resuspension rates due to a walking adult were up to 243 % higher than resuspension rates caused to a moving robot that simulated a child. Coastal urban areas impact atmospheric chemistry and air quality through various sources, interactions, and processes. This study examines the mass concentrations of fine mode (PM2.5) aerosol and its major and trace components (Al, As, Ba, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mo, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, Te, Ti, Tl, V, Zn). The comprehensive field measurements were conducted in Poland between September 2019 and May 2020. Seasonal distribution and drivers of these pollutants showed considerable variability. In winter, higher concentrations were observed for Pb, Co, and As due to the higher contribution of pyrogenic emission. The Principal Component Analysis provided evidence of anthropogenic sources of trace species associated with coal combustion by industry/power plants, brake wear-related emissions, vehicle emissions, shipping activities, road-resuspended dust, and urban construction activities. These results showed that major chemical elements (Ca, Na, Fe, Mg, Al, and K) contributed to 4.07-34.0% of all components. Se, Zn, and Br contributed 1.29%, 1.25%, and 1.04%, respectively, while other tracers ranged between 0.07% and 0.95%. To ensure good air quality during the China International Import Expo (CIIE) event, stringent emission-reduction measures were implemented in Shanghai. To assess the efficacy of these measures, this study measured typical categories of intermediate/semi volatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs), including alkanes (C 10 -C 26 n-alkanes and pristane), EPA-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkylnaphthalenes, benzothiazole (BTH) and chlorobenzenes (CBs), at an urban site of Shanghai before and during two CIIE events (2019 and 2020; non-CIIE versus CIIE). The average concentrations of alkanes and PAHs during both 2019 and 2020 CIIE events decreased by approximately 41% and 17%, respectively, compared to non-CIIE periods. However, the decline in BTH and CBs was only observed during CIIE-2019. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from alkanes, PAHs and BTH was evaluated under atmospheric conditions, revealing considerable SOA contributions from dimethylnaphthalenes and BTH. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis further revealed that life-related sources, such as cooking and residential emissions, make a noticeable contribution (21.6%) in addition to the commonly concerned gasoline-vehicle sources (31.5%), diesel-related emissions (20.8%), industrial emissions (18.6%) and ship emissions (7.5%). These findings provide valuable insights into the efficacy of the implemented measures in reducing atmospheric I/SVOCs levels. Accurate fine-mode and coarse-mode aerosol knowledge is crucial for understanding their impacts on the climate and Earth's ecosystems. However, current satellite-based Fine-Mode Aerosol Optical Depth (FAOD) and Coarse-Mode Aerosol Optical Depth (CAOD) methods have drawbacks including inaccuracies, low spatial coverage, and limited temporal duration. To overcome these issues, we developed new global-scale FAOD and CAOD from 2005 to 2020 using a novel deep learning model capable of the synergistic retrieval of two aerosol sizes. After validation with the aerosol robotic network (AERONET) and sky radiometer network (SKYNET), the new monthly FAOD and CAOD showed significant improvements in accuracy and spatial coverage. From 2005 to 2020, the new data showed that China had the greatest decrease in FAOD and CAOD. In contrast, India and South Latin America had a significant increase in FAOD versus North Africa in CAOD. FAOD in the regions of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay in South America have shown an upward trend. The results reveal that FAOD and CAOD display distinct patterns of change in the same regions, particularly on the west coast of the United States where FAOD is increasing, while CAOD is decreasing. Aside from the year 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the analysis showed that although China has seen at least an +85% increase in energy consumption and urban expansion in 2019 compared to 2005 due to the needs of development and construction, the implementation of China's air pollution control policies has led to a significant decrease in FAOD (-46%) and CAOD (-65%) after 2013. Industrial cities are strongly influenced by primary emissions of PM 2.5 from local industries. In addition, gaseous precursors, such as sulfur oxides (SO X ), nitrogen oxides (NO X ), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), emitted from industrial sources, undergo conversion into secondary inorganic and organic aerosols (SIAs and SOAs). In this study, the spatial distributions of primary and secondary PM 2.5 in Ulsan, the largest industrial city in South Korea, were visualized. PM 2.5 components (ions, carbons, and metals) and PM 2.5 precursors (SO 2 , NO 2 , NH 3 , and VOCs) were measured to estimate the concentrations of secondary inorganic ions (SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , and NH 4 + ) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP). The spatial distributions of SIAs and SOAs were then plotted by combining atmospheric dispersion modeling, receptor modeling, and monitoring data. Spatial distribution maps of primary and secondary PM 2.5 provide fundamental insights for formulating management policies in different districts of Ulsan. For instance, among the five districts in Ulsan, Nam-gu exhibited the highest levels of primary PM 2.5 and secondary nitrate. Consequently, controlling both PM 2.5 and NO 2 emissions becomes essential in this district. The methodology developed in this study successfully identified areas with dominant contributions from both primary emissions and secondary formation. Atmospheric carbonyl compounds play significant roles in the cycling of radicals and have exhibited surprisingly high levels in winter that were well correlated to particulate matter, for which the reason have not been clearly elucidated. Here we measured carbonyl compounds and other trace gasses together with PM 2.5 over urban Jinan in North China Plain during the winter. Markedly higher carbonyl concentrations (average: 14.63 ± 4.21 ppbv) were found during wintertime haze pollution, about one to three-times relative to those on non-haze days, with slight difference in chemical composition except formaldehyde (HCHO). HCHO (3.68 ppbv), acetone (3.17 ppbv), and acetaldehyde (CH 3 CHO) (2.83 ppbv) were the three most abundant species, accounting for ∼75% of the total carbonylson both haze and non-haze days. Results from observational-based model (OBM) with atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) indicated that AOC significantly increased with the increasing carbonyls during the winter haze events. Carbonyl photolysis have supplied key oxidants such as RO 2 and HO 2 , and thereby enhancing the formation of fine particles and secondary organic aerosols, elucidating the observed haze-carbonyls inter-correlation. Diurnal variation with carbonyls exhibiting peak values at early-noon and night highlighted the combined contribution of both secondary formation and primary diesel-fuel sources. 1-butene was further confirmed to be the major precursor for HCHO. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) serves as a crucial indicator for assessing regional air quality. To address regional and urban pollution issues, there is a requirement for high-resolution AOD products, as the existing data is of very coarse resolution. To address this issue, we retrieved high-resolution AOD over Kanpur (26.4499°N, 80.3319°E), located in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) region using Landsat 8 imageries and implemented the algorithm SEMARA, which combines SARA (Simplified Aerosol Retrieval Algorithm) and SREM (Simplified and Robust Surface Reflectance Estimation). Our approach leveraged the green band of the Landsat 8, resulting in an impressive spatial resolution of 30 m of AOD and rigorously validated with available AERONET observations. The retrieved AOD is in good agreement with high correlation coefficients (r) of 0.997, a low root mean squared error of 0.035, and root mean bias of - 4.91%. We evaluated the retrieved AOD with downscaled MODIS (MCD19A2) AOD products across various land classes for cropped and harvested period of agriculture cycle over the study region. It is noticed that over the built-up region of Kanpur, the SEMARA algorithm exhibits a stronger correlation with the MODIS AOD product compared to vegetation, barren areas and water bodies. The SEMARA approach proved to be more effective for AOD retrieval over the barren and built-up land categories for harvested period compared with the cropping period. Personal air monitoring using a TSI SidePak AM520 personal aerosol monitor was performed on a northern Colorado construction site during five tasks from the OSHA Table 1: Specified Exposure Control Methods When Working With Materials Containing Crystalline Silica to estimate silica dust concentrations in real time. Photometric measurements were modified using a gravimetric correction factor and a % respirable crystalline silica adjustment. Each task was sampled once; sample time ranged from 14 min to 40 min, with a mean sample time of 27 min. The mean silica dust concentration estimates (μg/m3) (standard deviation [SD]) for the five tasks computed from the TSI SidePak AM520 respirable dust measurements were core drilling 12 μg/m3 [2.46], grinding 918 μg/m3 [1134.08], cutting with a walk-behind saw 36 μg/m3 [79.67], jackhammering 27 μg/m3 [23.24], and dowel drilling 66 μg/m3 [77.65]. Silica exposure estimates from real-time monitoring can be used to identify exposures that may be related to inadequate controls or worker behaviors that contribute to peak exposures. Introduction: IQOS HEETS are promoted as reduced-risk alternatives to cigarettes. Although some studies have investigated the chemical composition of HEETS emissions, little is known on whether toxicant levels in such emissions are affected by different puffing parameters and flavor varieties. This has important implications when assessing actual human exposure, since IQOS users develop a specific and personalized puffing behavior and may use different HEETS variants., Methods: This study measured the levels of nicotine, total particulate matter, carbonyl compounds, and tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) in the emissions of nine differently flavored HEETS and two cigarettes (1R6F and Marlboro Red, MR). Emissions from Yellow HEETS, 1R6F, and MR were collected using the World Health Organization Intense smoking regime and four more intense smoking regimes., Results: Yellow HEETS aerosol contained lower levels of toxicants compared to 1R6F and MR smoke. More intense smoking regimes increased carbonyl release in cigarette smoke, whereas only higher puff frequency led to lower levels of toxicants in Yellow HEETS aerosol. Some HEETS varieties exhibited higher levels of formaldehyde and TSNAs in their aerosols compared to Yellow HEETS., Conclusions: Puff frequency was identified as the only smoking parameter that significantly lowered the release of almost all toxicants in Yellow HEETS, whereas a combination of higher puff volume and puff duration led to increased levels of some carbonyls. Differences in toxicant levels between various commercially available HEETS have important implications when assessing their health impact, as their consumption might induce different toxicant exposure and health effects., Implications: HEETS release about half as much nicotine and substantially lower levels of toxicants compared to cigarettes. Literature data showed that puffing intensity is increased in cigarette smokers switching to HEETS, maybe in reaction to these lower nicotine levels. Our results show a differential impact of increased puff frequency, puff duration, and puff volume in the release of toxicants from HEETS. Thus, industry-independent studies on puff topography are critical to make choices for the most relevant puffing regime for heated tobacco product regulation. During the past two decades, efforts have been made to further reduce particulate air pollution across New York State through various Federal and State policy implementations. Air quality has also been affected by economic drivers like the 2007-2009 recession and changing costs for different approaches to electricity generation. Prior work has focused on particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm. However, there is also interest in the effects of ultrafine particles on health and the environment and analyses of changes in particle number concentrations (PNCs) are also of interest to assess the impacts of changing emissions. Particle number size distributions have been measured since 2005. Prior apportionments have been limited to seasonal analyses over a limited number of years because of software limitations. Thus, it has not been possible to perform trend analyses on the source-specific PNCs. Recent development have now permitted the analysis of larger data sets using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) including its diagnostics. Thus, this study separated and analyzed the hourly averaged size distributions from 2005 to 2019 into two data sets; October to March and April to September. Six factors were resolved for both data sets with sources identified as nucleation, traffic 1, traffic 2, fresh secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA), aged SIA, and O3-rich aerosol. The resulting source-specific PNCs were combined to provide continuous data sets and analyzed for trends. The trends were then examined with respect to the implementation of regulations and the timing of economic drivers. Nucleation was strongly reduced by the requirement of ultralow (<15 ppm) sulfur on-road diesel fuel in 2006. Secondary inorganic particles and O 3 -rich PNCs show strong summer peaks. Aged SIA was constant and then declined substantially in 2015 but rose in 2019. Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) emitted from marine transportation, bulk materials handling at the docks, and dust dispersion has garnered increased attention, particularly in the interface between port and urban areas. This study explored the inter-transport of PM 2.5 between Kaohsiung Harbor and neighboring Metro Kaohsiung. Chemical analyses of PM 2.5 samples from four sites include water-soluble ions, metallic elements, carbons, anhydrosugars, and organic acids to establish PM 2.5 's chemical fingerprints. The CALPUFF air dispersion model is employed to simulate the spatiotemporal distribution of PM 2.5 in Kaohsiung Harbor and adjacent urban areas. A clear seasonal and diurnal variation of PM 2.5 concentrations and chemical composition was observed in both harbor and urban areas. The high correlation of nighttime PM 2.5 levels between the port and urban areas suggests inter-transport phenomena. Sea salt spray, ship emissions, secondary aerosols, and heavy fuel-oil boilers exhibit higher levels in the port area than in the urban area. In Metro Kaohsiung, mobile sources, fugitive dust, and waste incinerators emerge as major PM 2.5 contributors. Furthermore, sea breeze significantly influences PM 2.5 dispersion from Kaohsiung Harbor to Metro Kaohsiung, particularly in the afternoon. The atmospheric oxidizing capacity is the most important driving force for the chemical transformation of pollutants in the atmosphere. Traditionally, the atmospheric oxidizing capacity mainly depends on the concentration of O 3 and other gaseous oxidants. However, the atmospheric oxidizing capacity based on gas-phase oxidation cannot accurately describe the explosive growth of secondary particulate matter under complex air pollution. From the chemical perspective, the atmospheric oxidizing capacity mainly comes from the activation of O 2 , which can be achieved in both gas-phase and interfacial processes. In the heterogeneous or multiphase formation pathways of secondary particulate matter, the enhancement of oxidizing capacity ascribed to the O 2 /H 2 O-involved interfacial oxidation and hydrolysis processes is an unrecognized source of atmospheric oxidizing capacity. Revealing the enhanced oxidizing capacity due to interfacial processes in high-concentration particulate matter environments and its contribution to the formation of secondary pollution are critical in understanding haze chemistry. The accurate evaluation of atmospheric oxidizing capacity ascribed to interfacial processes is also an important scientific basis for the implementation of PM 2.5 and O 3 collaborative control in China and around the world.

The quantification of aerosol size distributions is crucial for understanding the climate and health impacts of aerosols, validating models, and identifying aerosol sources. This work provides one of the first continuous measurements of aerosol size distribution from 1.02 to 8671 nm near the shore of Lake Michigan. The data were collected during the Lake Michigan Ozone Study (LMOS 2017), a comprehensive air quality measurement campaign in May and June 2017. The time-resolved (2-min) size distribution are reported herein alongside meteorology, remotely sensed data, gravimetric filters, and gas-phase variables. Mean concentrations of key aerosol parameters include PM2.5 (6.4 μg m-3), number from 1 to 3 nm (1.80x104 cm-3) and number greater than 3 nm (8x103 cm-3). During the field campaign, approximately half of days showed daytime ultrafine burst events, characterized by particle growth from sub 10 nm to 25-100 nm. A specific investigation of ultrafine lake spray aerosol was conducted due to enhanced ultrafine particles in onshore flows coupled with sustained wave breaking conditions during the campaign. Upon closer examination, the relationships between the size distribution, wind direction, wind speed, and wave height did not qualitatively support ultrafine particle production from lake spray aerosol; statistical analysis of particle number and wind speed also failed to show a relationship. Greater Cairo, the largest megacity of the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region, is currently suffering from major aerosol pollution, posing a significant threat to public health. However, the main sources of pollution remain insufficiently characterized due to limited atmospheric observations. To bridge this knowledge gap, we conducted a continuous 2-month field study during the winter of 2019-2020 at an urban background site, documenting for the first time the chemical and physical properties of submicron (PM 1 ) aerosols. Crustal material from both desert dust and road traffic dust resuspension contributed as much as 24 % of the total PM 1 mass (rising to 66 % during desert dust events), a figure not commonly observed in urban environments. Our observations showed significant decreases in black carbon concentrations and ammonium sulfate compared to data from 15 years ago, indicating an important reduction in both local and regional emissions as a result of effective mitigation measures. The diurnal variability of carbonaceous aerosols was attributed to emissions emanating from local traffic at rush hours and nighttime open biomass burning. Surprisingly, semi-volatile ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) originating from local open biomass and waste burning was found to be the main chemical species in PM 1 over Cairo. Its nighttime formation contributed to aerosol water uptake during morning hours, thereby playing a major role in the build-up of urban haze. While our results confirm the persistence of a significant dust reservoir over Cairo, they also unveil an additional source of highly hygroscopic (semi-volatile) inorganic salts, leading to a unique type of urban haze. This study uses aerosol optical depth (AOD) and cloud properties data to investigate the influence of aerosol on the cloud properties over the Tibetan Plateau and its adjacent regions. The study regions are divided as the western part of the Tibetan Plateau (WTP), the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), and the Sichuan Basin (SCB). All three regions show significant cloud effects under low aerosol loading conditions. In WTP, under low aerosol loading conditions, the effective radius of liquid cloud particles (LREF) decreases with the increase of aerosol loading, while the effective radius of ice cloud particles (IREF) and cloud top height (CTH) increase during the cold season. Increased aerosol loading might inhibit the development of warm rain processes, transporting more cloud droplets above the freezing level and promoting ice cloud development. During the warm season, under low aerosol loading conditions, both the cloud microphysical (LREF and IREF) and macrophysical (cloud top height and cloud fraction) properties increase with the increase of aerosol loading, likely due to higher dust aerosol concentration in this region. In IGP, both LREF and IREF increase with the increase in aerosol loading during the cold season. In SCB, LREF increases with the increase in aerosol loading, while IREF decreases, possibly due to the higher hygroscopic aerosol concentration in the SCB during the cold season. Meteorological conditions also modulate the aerosol-cloud interaction. Under different convective available potential energy (CAPE) and relative humidity (RH) conditions, the influence of aerosol on clouds varies in the three regions. Under low CAPE and RH conditions, the relationship between LREF and aerosol in both the cold and warm seasons is opposite in the WTP: LREF decreases with the increase of aerosol in the cold season, while it increases in the warm season. This discrepancy may be attributed to a difference in the moisture condition between the cold and warm seasons in this region. Recently, extreme wildfires occur frequently around the world and emit substantial brown carbon (BrC) into the atmosphere, whereas the molecular compositions and photochemical evolution of BrC remain poorly understood. In this work, primary smoke aerosols were generated from wood smoldering, and secondary smoke aerosols were formed by the OH radical photooxidation in an oxidation flow reactor, where both primary and secondary smoke samples were collected on filters. After solvent extraction of filter samples, the molecular composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was determined by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS). The molecular composition of dissolved BrC was obtained based on the constraints of DOC formulae. The proportion of dissolved BrC fractions accounted for approximately 1/3-1/2 molecular formulae of DOC. The molecular characteristics of dissolved BrC showed higher levels of carbon oxidation state, double bond equivalents, and modified aromaticity index than those of DOC, indicating that dissolved BrC fractions were a class of organic structures with relatively higher oxidation state, unsaturated and aromatic degree in DOC fractions. The comparative analysis suggested that aliphatic and olefinic structures dominated DOC fractions (contributing to 70.1%-76.9%), while olefinic, aromatic, and condensed aromatic structures dominated dissolved BrC fractions (contributing to 97.5%-99.9%). It is worth noting that dissolved BrC fractions only contained carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAMs)-like structures, unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatic structures, and highly oxygenated compounds. CRAMs-like structures were the most abundant species in both DOC and dissolved BrC fractions. Nevertheless, the specific molecular characteristics for DOC and dissolved BrC fractions varied with subgroups after aging. The results highlight the similarities and differences in the molecular compositions and characteristics of DOC and dissolved BrC fractions with aging. The 'extreme' emission abatement during the lockdown (from the end of 2019 to the early 2020) provided an experimental period to investigate the corresponding source-specific effects of aerosol. In this study, the variations of source-specific light absorption (b abs ) and direct radiative effect (DRE) were obtained during and after the lockdown period by using the artificial neural network (ANN) and source apportionment environmental receptor model. The results showed that the b abs decreased for all sources during the two periods. The most reductions were observed with ∼90% for traffic-related emissions (during the lockdown) and ∼85% for coal combustion (after the lockdown), respectively. Heightened b abs (370 nm) values were obtained for coal and biomass burning during the lockdown, which was attributed to the enhanced atmospheric oxidization capacity. Nevertheless, the variations of b abs (880 nm) after the lockdown was mainly due to the weakening of oxidation and reduced emissions of secondary precursors. The present study indicated that the large-scale emission reduction can promote both reductions of b abs (370 nm) and DRE (34-68%) during the lockdown. The primary emissions decrease (e.g., Traffic emission) may enhance atmosphere oxidation, increase the ultraviolet wavelength light absorption and DRE efficiencies. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) is an essential metric for evaluating the atmospheric aerosol load and its impacts on climate, air quality, and public health. In this study, the AOD data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) were validated against ground-based measurements from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) throughout the Eastern Mediterranean, a region characterized by diverse aerosol types and sources. A comparative analysis was performed on 3-hourly CAMS AOD values at 550 nm against observations from 20 AERONET stations across Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Egypt, and Turkey from 2003 to 2021. The CAMS AOD data exhibited a good overall agreement with AERONET AOD data, demonstrated by a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.77, a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.08, and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.11. Nonetheless, spatial and temporal variations were observed in the CAMS AOD data performance, with site-specific correlation coefficients ranging from 0.57 to 0.85, the lowest correlations occurring in Egypt and the highest in Greece. An underestimation of CAMS AOD was noted at inland sites with high AOD levels, while a better agreement was observed at coastal sites with lower AOD levels. The diurnal variation analysis indicated improved CAMS reanalysis performance during the afternoon and evening hours. Seasonally, CAMS reanalysis showed better agreement with AERONET AODs in spring and autumn, with lower correlation coefficients noted in summer and winter. This study marks the first comprehensive validation of CAMS AOD performance in the Eastern Mediterranean, offering significant enhancements for regional air quality and climate modeling, and underscores the essential role of consistent validation in refining aerosol estimations within this complex and dynamic geographic setting., (© 2024. This study assessed the air quality status in different functional zones of Dhanbad-a coal-mining and industrial hub, based on the measurement of aromatic and halogenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using gas chromatography. The study encompasses source apportionment of VOCs and their chemical reactivity in terms of OH radical loss rate (L OH ), ozone-forming potential (OFP), and their secondary organic aerosol forming potential (SOAp). Furthermore, prioritization of VOCs based on a fuzzy-analytical hierarchical process (F-AHP) has also been done. The results found xylene species to have the highest concentration in all three seasons across traffic-intersection and industrial zones and toluene at the institutional zone. The study identified four sources using positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, viz., mixed traffic exhaust (35%), coal combustion sources (30%), industrial (26%), and solvent usage (9%). L OH and SOAp were ~ 16 times more at the industrial and traffic-intersection zone than the institutional zone. The aromatic species contributed 97% to the OFP, and many species exhibited less contribution to the mixing ratio of VOCs but displayed a high contribution to L OH , OFP, and SOAp, suggesting the need to prefer reactivity-based strategies in addition to concentration-based strategies in the future for their regulation. The F-AHP-based priority component analysis identified 16 species out of 29 in the priority watch list (nine in tier-1, four in tier-2, and three in tier-3). The paucity of data and lack of ambient air quality standards on VOCs (except benzene) make it difficult to determine which aspect should be dealt with first and which species require more attention. The concentrations of anhydrosugars (levoglucosan, mannosan, and galactosan), polyols (inositol, xylitol, sorbitol, and mannitol), and glucose were measured in PM 1 and PM 10 samples collected during 1 year at a traffic site in the city of Elche (southeastern Spain). Levoglucosan, mannosan, and galactosan were mainly found in the PM 1 fraction since they are mainly emitted from biomass burning (BB). Likewise, inositol, xylitol, and sorbitol were primarily distributed in the fine mode, suggesting a non-negligible contribution from anthropogenic sources (specifically BB) to the levels of these compounds. This was supported by their seasonal variations, with higher concentrations during winter, and their correlations with levoglucosan concentrations. The average contributions of biomass burning and biogenic sources to OC and PM levels were calculated using levoglucosan and mannitol, respectively, as tracers. On average, BB accounted for 12% and 16% of the OC in PM 1 and PM 10 , while the estimated contribution of fungal spores to OC and PM 10 levels was 1.2 and 0.8%, respectively. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the main source of bioaerosol emissions. The cover of deodorization within WWTPs serves not only to manage odors but also to limit the dispersion of bioaerosols. This study investigated the emission characteristics and exposure risks of bioaerosols inside deodorization covers from a WWTP in Northern China. The results revealed that the concentration of bacteria in bioaerosols ranged from 96 ± 8 to 706 ± 45 CFU/m 3 , with the highest concentration observed in the biochemical reaction tank. The predominant bacterial genera in bioaerosols within the odor control covers were Cetobacterium, Romboutsia, Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Tubricibacter, while the dominant fungal genera included Aspergillus, Alternaria, Fusarium, and Cladosporium. The main water-soluble ions in the air were NH 4 + , Ca 2+ , SO 4 2- , and Cl - . SO 4 2- was found to promote the survival of Cetobacterium, Brevibacterium, Fusarium, Penicillium, and Filobasidium, while Cl - exhibited inhibitory effects on most microorganisms in bioaerosols. Source tracker analysis indicated that wastewater was the primary source of bioaerosols in the biochemical reaction tank. The non-carcinogenic risk associated with bioaerosols within deodorization covers was less than 1 (2.34 × 10 -9 to 3.08 × 10 -2 ). FunGuild fungal functional prediction suggested that the abundance of animal pathogens was highest in the bioaerosols from the anaerobic sedimentation tank. BugBase phenotypic prediction showed that the abundance of potential pathogens in secondary sedimentation tank bioaerosols was the highest. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) assume a pivotal role during the formation stages of ozone (O 3 ) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA), serving as their primary precursors. We used the latest MEGAN3.1 model, updated vegetation data and emission factors, combined with MODIS data analysis to simulate and estimate the integrated emissions of BVOC from nine provinces in China's Yellow River Basin in 2018. Following an extensive evaluation of the WRF-CMAQ model utilizing diverse parameters, the simulated and observed values had correlation coefficients between them that ranged from 0.94 to 0.99, implying a favorable outcome in terms of simulation efficacy. The findings from the simulation analysis reveal that the combined BVOC emissions from the nine provinces in the Yellow River Basin reached a total of 6.51 Tg in 2018. Among these provinces, Sichuan, Henan, and Shaanxi ranked highest, with emissions of 1.28 Tg, 1.04 Tg, and 0.96 Tg, respectively. BVOC emissions led to concentrations of 36.72 μg/m³ in the daily maximum 8-h ozone and 0.59 μg/m³ in the average SOA in nine provinces of the Yellow River Basin in July. Isoprene contributed the most to the O 3 production with 6.31 μg/m 3 , and monoterpenes contributed the most to SOA production with 0.45 μg/m 3 . ΔSOA and ΔOzone are mainly distributed in the belts of central Sichuan Province, southern Shaanxi Province, western Henan Province, northern Qinghai Province, central Inner Mongolia, and southern Shanxi Province, and most of these areas are located 50 km around the Yellow River. O 3 and SOA in Taiyuan, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Zhengzhou cities are strongly influenced by the generation of BVOCs. Current methods for measuring black carbon aerosol (BC) by optical methods apportion BC to fossil fuel and wood combustion. However, these results are aggregated: local and non-local combustion sources are lumped together. The spatial apportioning of carbonaceous aerosol sources is challenging in remote or suburban areas because non-local sources may be significant. Air quality modeling would require highly accurate emission inventories and unbiased dispersion models to quantify such apportionment. We propose FUSTA (FUzzy SpatioTemporal Apportionment) methodology for analyzing aethalometer results for equivalent black carbon coming from fossil fuel (eBC ff ) and wood combustion (eBC wb ). We applied this methodology to ambient measurements at three suburban sites around Santiago, Chile, in the winter season 2021. FUSTA results showed that local sources contributed ∼80% to eBC ff and eBC wb in all sites. By using PM 2.5 - eBC ff and PM 2.5 - eBC wb scatterplots for each fuzzy cluster (or source) found by FUSTA, the estimated lower edge lines showed distinctive slopes in each measurement site. These slopes were larger for non-local sources (aged aerosols) than for local ones (fresh emissions) and were used to apportion combustion PM 2.5 in each site. In sites Colina, Melipilla and San Jose de Maipo, fossil fuel combustion contributions to PM 2.5 were 26 % (15.9 μg m -3 ), 22 % (9.9 μg m -3 ), and 22 % (7.8 μg m -3 ), respectively. Wood burning contributions to PM 2.5 were 22 % (13.4 μg m -3 ), 19 % (8.9 μg m -3 ) and 22% (7.3 μg m -3 ), respectively. Pregnant women are highly vulnerable to environmental stressors such as ambient particulate matter (PM). Particularly during their 3rd trimester, their bodies undergo significant oxidative stresses. To further consolidate this dialogue into practice, the current study evaluated healthy pregnant women (n = 150 housewives; 18-40 years old; gestation age >36 weeks) from the highly polluted city of Yazd, Iran, from September to November 2021. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) data retrieved from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were employed as influencing variables and validated using field-collected PM 10 data (r = 0.62, p-value <0.01). The links between blood platelet count, enzymes (SGOT, SGPT, LDH, bilirubin), metabolic products (urea and acid uric) and different combinations of AOD data were assessed using the Generalized Additive Model. The results showed a high temporal variability in AOD (0.94 ± 0.51) but a spatially stable distribution pattern. The mean AOD during the 3rd trimester, followed by that of the three-month peak, were identified as the most significant non-linear predictors, while the mean AOD during the 1st trimester and throughout the entire pregnancy showed no significant associations with any of the biomarkers. The worst forest fires in Korean history broke out on March 4, 2022 and lasted for ten days. In order to monitor the catastrophic forest fires, Geostationary Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (GK)-2 A Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) and GK-2B Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) data were used in this study. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) irretrievable for the biomass-burning aerosols produced with water vapor classified as could-contaminated, was reconstructed by ultraviolet aerosol index (UVAI). Afterward, aerosol radiative forcing (ARF) at TOA was finally estimated by the correlation of AOD and surface albedo with ARF. Most of the aerosols drifted toward the East Sea by the prevailing westerly winds, and caused a cooling effect on the atmosphere with a maximum daily average radiative forcing of -69.28 Wm -2 . Furthermore, the fire-prone conditions for the unprecedented forest fires were discussed in detail as following aspects; 1) the most severe drought caused by a "triple-dip" La Niña; 2) pressure patterns and topographical features that generate strong winds; 3) coniferous forests prone to fires; and 4) increased human activity following the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination. In this study, online water-soluble inorganic ions were detected to deduce the formation mechanism of secondary inorganic aerosol in Xianyang, China during wintertime. The dominant inorganic ions of sulfate (SO 4 2- ), nitrate (NO 3 - ), and ammonium (NH 4 + ) (the sum of those is abbreviated as SNA) accounted for 17%, 21%, and 12% of PM 2.5 mass, respectively. While the air quality deteriorated from excellent to poor grades, the precursor gas sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) of SO 4 2- increased and then decreased with a fluctuation, while nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and ammonia (NH 3 ), precursors of NO 3 - and NH 4 + , and SNA show increasing trends. Meteorological factors including boundary layer height (BLH), temperature, and wind speed also show decline trends, except relative humidity (RH). Meanwhile, the secondary conversion ratio shows a remarkable increasing trend, indicating that there was a strong secondary transformation. From the perspective of chemical mechanisms, RH is positively correlated with sulfur oxidation ratios (SOR), nitrogen oxidation ratios (NOR), and ammonia conversion ratios, representing that the increase of humidity could promote the generation of SNA. Notably, SOR and NOR were also positively related to the ammonia. On the one hand, the low wind speed and BLH led to the accumulation of pollutants. On the other hand, the increases of RH and ammonia promoted more formations of SNA and PM 2.5 . Organic nitrogen (ON) compounds play a significant role in the light absorption of brown carbon and the formation of organic aerosols, however, the mixing state, secondary formation processes, and influencing factors of ON compounds are still unclear. This paper reports on the mixing state of ON-containing particles based on measurements obtained using a high-performance single particle aerosol mass spectrometer in January 2020 in Guangzhou. The ON-containing particles accounted for 21% of the total detected single particles, and the particle count and number fraction of the ON-containing particles were two times higher at night than during the day. The prominent increase in the content of ON-containing particles with the enhancement of NO x mainly occurred at night, and accompanied by high relative humidity and nitrate, which were associated with heterogeneous reactions between organics and gaseous NO x and/or NO 3 radical. The synchronous decreases in ON-containing particles and the mass absorption coefficient of water-soluble extracts at 365 nm in the afternoon may be associated with photo-bleaching of the ON species in the particles. In addition, the positive matrix factorization analysis found five factors dominated the formation processes of ON particles, and the nitrate factor (33%) mainly contributed to the production of ON particles at night. As a vital type of light-absorbing aerosol, brown carbon (BrC) presents inherent associations with atmospheric photochemistry and climate change. However, the understanding of the chemical and optical properties of BrC is limited, especially in some resource-dependent cities with long heating periods in northwest China. This study showed that the annual average abundances of Water-soluble BrC (WS-BrC) were 9.33±7.42 and 8.69±6.29 µg/m 3 in Baotou and Wuhai and the concentrations, absorption coefficient (Abs 365 ), and mass absorption efficiency (MAE 365 ) of WS-BrC presented significant seasonal patterns, with high values in the heating season and low values in the non-heating season; while showing opposite seasonal trends for the Absorption Ångström exponent (AAE 300-400 ). Comparatively, the levels of WS-BrC in developing regions (such as cities in Asia) were higher than those in developed regions (such as cities in Europe and Australia), indicating the significant differences in energy consumption in these regions. By combining fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra with the parallel factor (PARAFAC) model, humic-like (C1 and C2) and protein-like (C3) substances were identified, and accounted for 61.40%±4.66% and 38.6%±3.78% at Baotou, and 60.33%±6.29% and 39.67%±4.17% at Wuhai, respectively. Aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) plays an important role in secondary aerosol formation. In this study, a whole year field campaign was conducted at Shanxi in north Zhejiang Province during 2021. ALWC estimated by ISORROPIA-II was then investigated to explore its characteristics and relationship with secondary aerosols. ALWC exhibited a highest value in spring (66.38 µg/m 3 ), followed by winter (45.08 µg/m 3 ), summer (41.64 µg/m 3 ), and autumn (35.01 µg/m 3 ), respectively. It was supposed that the secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA) were facilitated under higher ALWC conditions (RH > 80%), while the secondary organic species tended to form under lower ALWC levels. Higher RH (> 80%) promoted the NO 3 - formation via gas-particle partitioning, while SO 4 2- was generated at a relative lower RH (> 50%). The ALWC was more sensitive to NO 3 - (R = 0.94) than SO 4 2- (R = 0.90). Thus, the self-amplifying processes between the ALWC and SIA enhanced the particle mass growth. The sensitivity of ALWC and O X (NO 2  + O 3 ) to secondary organic carbon (SOC) varied in different seasons at Shanxi, more sensitive to aqueous-phase reactions (daytime R = 0.84; nighttime R = 0.54) than photochemical oxidation (daytime R = 0.23; nighttime R = 0.41) in wintertime with a high level of O X (daytime: 130-140 µg/m 3 ; nighttime: 100-140 µg/m 3 ). Biomass burning (BB) is a very important emission source that significantly adversely impacts regional air quality. BB produces a large number of primary organic aerosol (POA) and black carbon (BC). Besides, BB also provides many precursors for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) generation. In this work, the ratio of levoglucosan (LG) to organic carbon (OC) and the fire hotspots map was used to identify the open biomass burning (OBB) events, which occurred in two representative episodes, October 13 to November 30, 2020, and April 1 to April 30, 2021. The ratio of organic aerosol (OA) to reconstructed PM 2.5 concentration (PM 2.5 *) increased with the increase of LG/OC. When LG/OC ratio is higher than 0.03, the highest OA/PM 2.5 * ratio can reach 80%, which means the contribution of OBB to OA is crucial. According to the ratio of LG to K + , LG to mannosan (MN) and the regional characteristics of Longfengshan, it can be determined that the crop residuals are the main fuel. The occurrence of OBB coincides with farmers' preferred choices, i.e., burning biomass in "bright weather". The "bright weather" refers to the meteorological conditions with high temperature, low humidity, and without rain. On-line chemical characterization of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) with soft ionization technique and ultrahigh-resolution Mass Spectrometry (UHRMS) provides molecular information of organic constituents in real time. Here we describe the development and application of an automatic measurement system that incorporates PM 2.5 sampling, thermal desorption, atmospheric pressure photoionization, and UHRMS analysis. Molecular formulas of detected organic compounds were deducted from the accurate (±10 ppm) molecular weights obtained at a mass resolution of 100,000, allowing the identification of small organic compounds in PM 2.5 . Detection efficiencies of 28 standard compounds were determined and we found a high sensitivity and selectivity towards organic amines with limits of detection below 10 pg. As a proof of principle, PM 2.5 samples collected off-line in winter in the urban area of Beijing were analyzed using the Ionization Module and HRMS of the system. The automatic system was then applied to conduct on-line measurements during the summer time at a time resolution of 2 hr. The detected organic compounds comprised mainly CHON and CHN compounds below 350 m/z. Pronounced seasonal variations in elemental composition were observed with shorter carbon backbones and higher O/C ratios in summer than that in winter. This result is consistent with stronger photochemical reactions and thus a higher oxidation state of organics in summer. Diurnal variation in signal intensity of each formula provides crucial information to reveal its source and formation pathway. The air quality in China has improved significantly in the last decade and, correspondingly, the characteristics of PM 2.5 have also changed. We studied the interannual variation of PM 2.5 in Chengdu, one of the most heavily polluted megacities in southwest China, during the most polluted season (winter). Our results show that the mass concentrations of PM 2.5 decreased significantly year-by-year, from 195.8 ± 91.0 µg/m 3 in winter 2016 to 96.1 ± 39.3 µg/m 3 in winter 2020. The mass concentrations of organic matter (OM), SO 4 2- , NH 4 + and NO 3 - decreased by 49.6%, 57.1%, 49.7% and 28.7%, respectively. The differential reduction in the concentrations of chemical components increased the contributions from secondary organic carbon and NO 3 - and there was a larger contribution from mobile sources. The contribution of OM and NO 3 - not only increased with increasing levels of pollution, but also increased year-by-year at the same level of pollution. Four sources of PM 2.5 were identified: combustion sources, vehicular emissions, dust and secondary aerosols. Secondary aerosols made the highest contribution and increased year-by-year, from 40.6% in winter 2016 to 46.3% in winter 2020. By contrast, the contribution from combustion sources decreased from 14.4% to 8.7%. The reaction of carbonyl-to-imine/hemiaminal conversion in the atmospheric aqueous phase is a critical pathway to produce the light-absorbing N-containing secondary organic compounds (SOC). The formation mechanism of these compounds has been wildly investigated in bulk solutions with a low ionic strength. However, the ionic strength in the aqueous phase of the polluted atmosphere may be higher. It is still unclear whether and to what extent the inorganic ions can affect the SOC formation. Here we prepared the bulk solution with certain ionic strength, in which glyoxal and ammonium were mixed to mimic the aqueous-phase reaction. Molecular characterization by High-resolution Mass Spectrometry was performed to identify the N-containing products, and the light absorption of the mixtures was measured by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Thirty-nine N-containing compounds were identified and divided into four categories (N-heterocyclic chromophores, high-molecular-weight compounds with N-heterocycle, aliphatic imines/hemiaminals, and the unclassified). It was observed that the longer reaction time and higher ionic strength led to the formation of more N-heterocyclic chromophores and the increasing of the light-absorbance of the mixture. The added inorganic ions were proposed to make the aqueous phase somewhat viscous so that the molecules were prone to undergo consecutive and intramolecular reactions to form the heterocycles. In general, this study revealed that the enhanced ionic strength and prolonged reaction time had the promotion effect on the light-absorbing SOC formation. Traffic emissions are a dominant source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban environments. Though tailpipe exhaust has drawn extensive attention, the impact of non-tailpipe emissions on atmospheric SOA has not been well studied. Here, a closure study was performed combining urban tunnel experiments and dynamometer tests using an oxidation flow reactor in situ photo-oxidation. Results show a significant gap between field and laboratory research; the average SOA formation potential from real-world fleet is 639 ± 156 mg kg fuel -1 , higher than the reconstructed result (188 mg kg fuel -1 ) based on dynamometer tests coupled with fleet composition inside the tunnel. Considering the minimal variation of SOA/CO in emission standards, we also reconstruct CO and find the critical role of high-emitting events in the real-world SOA burden. Different profiles of organic gases are detected inside the tunnel than tailpipe exhaust, such as more abundant C 6 -C 9 aromatics, C 11 -C 16 species, and benzothiazoles, denoting contributions from non-tailpipe emissions to SOA formation. Using these surrogate chemical compounds, we roughly estimate that high-emitting, evaporative emission, and asphalt-related and tire sublimation share 14, 20, and 10% of the SOA budget, respectively, partially explaining the gap between field and laboratory research. These experimental results highlight the importance of non-tailpipe emissions to atmospheric SOA.

Livestock facilities are widely regarded as reservoirs of infectious disease, owing to their abundance in particulate matter (PM) and microbial bioaerosols. Over the past decade, bioaerosol studies have increasingly utilised high throughput sequencing (HTS) to achieve superior throughput, taxonomic resolution, and the detection of unculturable organisms. However, the prevailing focus on amplicon sequencing has limited the identification of viruses and microbial taxa at the species-level. Herein, a literature search was conducted to identify methods capable of overcoming the aforementioned limitations. Screening 1531 international publications resulted in 29 eligible for review. Metagenomics capable of providing rich insights were identified in only three instances. Notably, long-read sequencing was not utilised for metagenomics. This review also identified that sample collection methods lack a uniform approach, highlighted by the differences in sampling equipment, flow rates and durations. Further heterogeneity was introduced by the unique sampling conditions, which makes it challenging to ground new findings within the established literature. For instance, winter was associated with increased microbial abundance and antimicrobial resistance, yet less alpha diversity. Researchers implementing metagenomics into the livestock environment should consider season, the microclimate, and livestock growth stage as influential upon their findings. Atmospheric aerosols affect surface ozone concentrations by influencing radiation, but the mechanism and dominant factors are unclear. Therefore, this paper analyses the changes in aerosol-radiative-surface ozone in China's arid and semi-arid regions with the help of the Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SBDART) model. The results suggest that Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and coarse Particulate Matter (PM 10 ) have the same trend, with high values in spring and winter and low values in summer and autumn. Surface ozone is high in spring and summer and low in autumn and winter. Surface ozone is higher in spring and summer and lower in autumn and winter. In winter, mainly secondary pollutants are dominated by high pollution levels. In the rest of the seasons, a mixture of dust, motor vehicle exhaust, and soot is dominated by low pollution levels. Surface ozone is positively correlated with fine particles and negatively correlated with coarse particles. Temperature is positively correlated with surface ozone in all seasons and negatively correlated with PM 10 in summer, autumn, and winter. Precipitation negatively correlates with PM 10 each season and surface ozone in winter and spring. Analysis of surface ozone and PM 10 sources in the more polluted city of Hohhot based on the back-line trajectory model showed that airflow trajectories mainly transported surface ozone and PM 10 pollution from northwestern Inner Mongolia and western Mongolia. During dusty solid weather, the decrease in radiation reaching the Earth's surface and the cooling effect of aerosols lead to lower temperatures, which slows down the rate of chemical reactions of precursors of surface ozone, resulting in lower ozone concentrations at the surface. The health of intra-urban population in modern megacities relies largely on the biosafety within the microclimate of subway system, which can be vulnerable to epidemical challenges brought by virus-laden bioaerosols under varying factors. The literature has yet to address the association between the exposure risks to infectious pathogens and the dynamic changes of boundary conditions in this densely populated microclimate. This study aims at characterizing the bioaerosol dispersion, evaluating the exposure risks under various train arrival scenarios and hazard releasing positions in a real-world double-decker subway station. The results provide the evidence for the dominating airflow pattern, bioaerosols dispersion behaviors, exposure risk, and evacuation guidance in a representative microclimate of mega-cities. The tunnel effects of nearby pedestrian passageways are found to be dominating the airflow pattern, leading to the discharging of airborne bioaerosols. At least 60 % increasing of discharging rate of bioaerosol is attributed to the arrival of one or two trains at the subway platform compared with the scenario with no train arriving. Results from risk assessment with improved Wells-Riley model estimate 57.62 % of maximum infectivity probability with no train arriving. Large areas near the source at the platform floor still cannot be considered safe within 20 min. For the other two scenarios where trains arrive at the platform, the maximum probability of infection is below 5 %. Moreover, the majority of train carriages can be regarded as safe zones, as the ventilation across the screen door are mostly directed towards the platform. Additionally, releasing the bioaerosols at the platform floor poses the most severe threats to human health, and the corresponding evacuation strategies are suggested. The chemical composition of incense-generated organic aerosol in residential indoor air has received limited attention in Western literature. In this study, we conducted incense burning experiments in a single-family California residence during vacancy. We report the chemical composition of organic fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), associated emission factors (EFs), and gas-particle phase partitioning for indoor semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Speciated organic PM 2.5 measurements were made using two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-HR-ToF-MS) and semivolatile thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatography (SV-TAG). Organic PM 2.5 EFs ranged from 7 to 31 mg g -1 for burned incense and were largely comprised of polar and oxygenated species, with high abundance of biomass-burning tracers such as levoglucosan. Differences in PM 2.5 EFs and chemical profiles were observed in relation to the type of incense burned. Nine indoor SVOCs considered to originate from sources other than incense combustion were enhanced during incense events. Time-resolved concentrations of these SVOCs correlated well with PM 2.5 mass ( R 2 > 0.75), suggesting that low-volatility SVOCs such as bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate and butyl benzyl phthalate partitioned to incense-generated PM 2.5 . Both direct emissions and enhanced partitioning of low-volatility indoor SVOCs to incense-generated PM 2.5 can influence inhalation exposures during and after indoor incense use.

Climate change has exacerbated fire activity in the boreal region. Consequently, smoldering boreal peatland fires are an increasingly important source of light-absorbing atmospheric organic carbon ("brown carbon"; BrC). To date, however, BrC from this source remains largely unstudied, which limits our ability to predict its climate impact. Here, we use size-exclusion chromatography coupled with diode array UV-vis detection to examine the molecular-size-dependent light absorption properties of fresh and photoaged aqueous BrC extracts collected during laboratory combustion of boreal peat and live spruce foliage. The atmospheric stability of BrC extracts varies with chromophore molecular size and fuel type: in particular, the high-molecular-weight fractions of both peat- and spruce-BrC are more resistant to photobleaching than their corresponding low-molecular-weight fractions, and total light absorption by peat-BrC persists over longer illumination timescales than that of spruce-BrC. Importantly, the BrC molecular size distribution itself varies with fuel properties ( e.g. , moisture content) and to an even greater extent with fuel type. Overall, our findings suggest that the accurate estimation of BrC radiative forcing, and the overall climate impact of wildfires, will require atmospheric models to consider the impact of regional diversity in vegetation/fuel types.

This study aims to investigate the characteristics of carbonaceous aerosols and estimate emission factor (EF) based on roadway tunnel measurements, from two distinct vehicular fleets: an all light-duty vehicle (LDV) fleet, and a mixed fleet of 80% LDV and 20% heavy-duty vehicle (HDV). Carbonaceous content (organic carbon: OC and elemental carbon: EC) in total fine particles (PM 2.5 ) accounted for 41% ± 6.8% in LDV fleet and 48% ± 7.2% in mixed fleet. While higher volatile OC dominated in the LDV fleet emissions, in mixed fleet, lower volatile OC and EC emissions dominated due to the presence of higher HDV and super-emitter (SE) fractions which led to significantly higher optically active absorbing aerosols. Reconstructed HDV fleet EF was higher than LDV fleet by 36 times (PM 2.5 ), 19 times (OC) and 51 times (EC). Water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) derived from biomass pyrolytic smoke is deposited through atmospheric aerosols, negatively affecting aquatic ecological quality and safety. However, the temperature-dependent molecular diversity and dynamic formation of smoke-derived WSOC remain poorly understood in water. Herein, we explored the molecular-level formation mechanism of pyrolytic smoke-derived WSOC in water to explain the evolution, heterogeneous correlations, and sequential responses of molecules and functional groups to increasing pyrolysis temperature. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy was used to innovatively establish the characteristic correlations between spectroscopy and Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Temperature-dependent formation of WSOC exhibited diversity in absorbance/fluorescent components, unique/common molecules, and their chemical parameters, showing the simultaneous formation and degradation reactions. The common WSOC molecules with lower and higher degrees of oxidation showed significant positive and negative correlations with the fluorescent components, respectively. The primary sequential response of WSOC molecules to increasing pyrolysis temperature (lignin-like molecules → unsaturated hydrocarbons, condensed aromatic molecules → lipid-like/aliphatic-/peptide-like molecules) corresponded to the temperature response of functional groups (carboxylic/alcoholic → polysaccharides → aromatics/amides/phenolic/aliphatic groups), demonstrating well synergistic relationships between them. The chemical composition of aerosols plays a significant role in aerosol-cloud interactions and, although saccharides make up their largest organic mass fraction, the current process model for understanding sea spray aerosol (SSA) composition struggles to replicate the enrichment of saccharides that has been observed. Here, we simulated the generation of SSA and quantified the enrichment of two soluble saccharides (glucose and trehalose) in SSA with a homemade sea spray aerosol generator. The results of the generation experiments demonstrated that both saccharides, especially trehalose, can promote the generation of SSA, whereas surface-active fatty acids primarily inhibit SSA production due to fewer bubble bursts caused by a large amount of foam accumulation. A significant decrease in surface tension of seawater with the addition of fatty acids was observed, while only a minor decrease was observed for seawater with the addition of only saccharide. Enrichment factors (EFs) of saccharides measured using high performance anion-exchange chromatography (HPAEC) with pulsed amperometric detection (PAD) revealed no enrichment of glucose in submicron SSA, while trehalose showed a slight enrichment. In the presence of surface-active fatty acids on the seawater surface, a significant increase in the enrichment of saccharides in SSA was observed, with glucose and trehalose showing EF of approximately 27-fold and 58-fold, respectively. Besides, this enrichment was accompanied by the accumulation of calcium and magnesium ions. Atmospheric bioaerosols are influenced by multiple factors, including physical, chemical, and biotic interactions, and pose a significant threat to the public health and the environment. The nonnegligible truth however is that the primary driver of the changes in bioaerosol community diversity remains unknown. In this study, putative biological association (PBA) was obtained by constructing an ecological network. The relationship between meteorological conditions, atmospheric pollutants, water-soluble inorganic ions, PBA and bioaerosol community diversity was analyzed using random forest regression (RFR)-An ensemble learning algorithm based on a decision tree that performs regression tasks by constructing multiple decision trees and integrating the predicted results, and the contribution of different rich species to PBA was predicted. The species richness, evenness and diversity varied significantly in different seasons, with the highest in summer, followed by autumn and spring, and was lowest in winter. The RFR suggested that the explanation rate of alpha diversity increased significantly from 73.74 % to 85.21 % after accounting for the response of the PBA to diversity. The PBA, temperature, air pollution, and marine source air masses were the most crucial factors driving community diversity. PBA, particularly putative positive association (PPA), had the highest significance in diversity. We found that under changing external conditions, abundant taxa tend to cooperate to resist external pressure, thereby promoting PPA. In contrast, rare taxa were more responsive to the putative negative association because of their sensitivity to environmental changes. Heterogeneous oxidative aging of organic aerosols (OA) occurs ubiquitously in the atmosphere, initiated by oxidants, such as the hydroxyl radicals ( • OH). Hydroperoxyl radicals (HO 2 • ) are also an important oxidant in the troposphere, and its gas-phase chemistry has been well studied. However, the role of HO 2 • in heterogeneous OA oxidation remains elusive. Here, we carry out • OH-initiated heterogeneous oxidation of several OA model systems under different HO 2 • conditions in a flow tube reactor and characterize the molecular oxidation products using a suite of mass spectrometry instrumentation. By using hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX) with thermal desorption iodide-adduct chemical ionization mass spectrometry, we provide direct observation of organic hydroperoxide (ROOH) formation from heterogeneous HO 2 • and peroxy radicals (RO 2 • ) reactions for the first time. The ROOH may contribute substantially to the oxidation products, varied with the parent OA chemical structure. Furthermore, by regulating RO 2 • reaction pathways, HO 2 • also greatly influence the overall composition of the oxidized OA. Last, we suggest that the RO 2 • + HO 2 • reactions readily occur at the OA particle interface rather than in the particle bulk. These findings provide new mechanistic insights into the heterogeneous OA oxidation chemistry and help fill the critical knowledge gap in understanding atmospheric OA oxidative aging.

The negative effects of air pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 , particles with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤2.5 μm), on human health, climate, and ecosystems are causing significant concern. Nevertheless, little is known about the contributions of emerging pollutants such as plastic particles to PM 2.5 due to the lack of continuous measurements and characterization methods for atmospheric plastic particles. Here, we investigated the levels of fine plastic particles (FPPs) in PM 2.5 collected in urban Shanghai at a 2 h resolution by using a novel versatile aerosol concentration enrichment system that concentrates ambient aerosols up to 10-fold. The FPPs were analyzed offline using the combination of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques that distinguished FPPs from other carbon-containing particles. The average FPP concentrations of 5.6 μg/m 3 were observed, and the ratio of FPPs to PM 2.5 was 13.2% in this study. The FPP sources were closely related to anthropogenic activities, which pose a potential threat to ecosystems and human health. Given the dramatic increase in plastic production over the past 70 years, this study calls for better quantification and control of FPP pollution in the atmosphere.

Particulate brown carbon (BrC) plays a crucial role in the global radiative balance due to its ability to absorb light. However, the effect of molecular formation on the light absorption properties of BrC remains poorly understood. In this study, atmospheric BrC samples collected from six Chinese megacities in winter and summer were characterized through ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap MS) and light absorption measurements. The average values of BrC light absorption coefficient at a wavelength of 365 nm ( b abs365 ) in winter were approximately 4.0 times higher than those in summer. Nitrogen-containing organic molecules (CHNO) were identified as critical components of light-absorbing substances in both seasons, underscoring the importance of N-addition in BrC. These nitrogen-containing BrC chromophores were more closely related to nitro-containing compounds originating from biomass burning and nitrogen oxides (NO x )/nitrate (NO 3 - ) reactions in winter. In summer, they were related to reduced N-containing compounds formed in ammonia (NH 3 )/ammonium (NH 4 + ) reactions. The NH 3 /NH 4 + -mediated reactions contributed more to secondary BrC in summer than winter, particularly in southern cities. Compared with winter, the higher O/Cw, lower molecule conjugation indicator (double bond equivalent, DBE), and reduced BrC b abs365 in summer suggest a possible bleaching mechanism during the oxidation process. These findings strengthen the connection between molecular composition and the light-absorbing properties of BrC, providing insights into the formation mechanisms of BrC chromophores across northern and southern Chinese cities in different seasons.

Sub-Saharan Africa is a hotspot for biomass burning (BB)-derived carbonaceous aerosols, including light-absorbing organic (brown) carbon (BrC). However, the chemically complex nature of BrC in BB aerosols from this region is not fully understood. We generated smoke in a chamber through smoldering combustion of common sub-Saharan African biomass fuels (hardwoods, cow dung, savanna grass, and leaves). We quantified aethalometer-based, real-time light-absorption properties of BrC-containing organic-rich BB aerosols, accounting for variations in wavelength, fuel type, relative humidity, and photochemical aging conditions. In filter samples collected from the chamber and Botswana in the winter, we identified 182 BrC species, classified into lignin pyrolysis products, nitroaromatics, coumarins, stilbenes, and flavonoids. Using an extensive set of standards, we determined species-specific mass and emission factors. Our analysis revealed a linear relationship between the combined BrC species contribution to chamber-measured BB aerosol mass (0.4-14%) and the mass-absorption cross-section at 370 nm (0.2-2.2 m 2 g -1 ). Hierarchical clustering resolved key molecular-level components from the BrC matrix, with photochemically aged emissions from leaf and cow-dung burning showing BrC fingerprints similar to those found in Botswana aerosols. These quantitative findings could potentially help refine climate model predictions, aid in source apportionment, and inform effective air quality management policies for human health and the global climate.

A reliable determination of equivalent black carbon (eBC) mass concentrations derived from filter absorption photometers (FAPs) measurements depends on the appropriate quantification of the mass absorption cross-section (MAC) for converting the absorption coefficient (b abs ) to eBC. This study investigates the spatial-temporal variability of the MAC obtained from simultaneous elemental carbon (EC) and b abs measurements performed at 22 sites. We compared different methodologies for retrieving eBC integrating different options for calculating MAC including: locally derived, median value calculated from 22 sites, and site-specific rolling MAC. The eBC concentrations that underwent correction using these methods were identified as LeBC (local MAC), MeBC (median MAC), and ReBC (Rolling MAC) respectively. Pronounced differences (up to more than 50 %) were observed between eBC as directly provided by FAPs (NeBC; Nominal instrumental MAC) and ReBC due to the differences observed between the experimental and nominal MAC values. The median MAC was 7.8 ± 3.4 m 2 g -1 from 12 aethalometers at 880 nm, and 10.6 ± 4.7 m 2 g -1 from 10 MAAPs at 637 nm. The experimental MAC showed significant site and seasonal dependencies, with heterogeneous patterns between summer and winter in different regions. In addition, long-term trend analysis revealed statistically significant (s.s.) decreasing trends in EC. Interestingly, we showed that the corresponding corrected eBC trends are not independent of the way eBC is calculated due to the variability of MAC. NeBC and EC decreasing trends were consistent at sites with no significant trend in experimental MAC. Conversely, where MAC showed s.s. trend, the NeBC and EC trends were not consistent while ReBC concentration followed the same pattern as EC. The tobacco emission condensate, henceforth referred to as "tobacco condensate," plays a critical role in assessing the toxicity of tobacco products. This condensate, derived from tobacco emissions, provides an optimized liquid concentrate for storage and concentration control. Thus, the validation of its constituents is vital for toxicity assessments. This study used tobacco condensates from 3R4F cigarettes and three heated tobacco product (HTP) variants to quantify and contrast organic compounds (OCs) therein. The hazard index (HI) for tobacco emissions and condensates was determined to ascertain the assessment validity. The total particulate matter (TPM) for 3R4F registered at 17,667 μg cig -1 , with its total OC (TOC) at 3777 μg cig -1 . HTPs' TPM and TOC were 9342 ± 1918 μg cig -1 and 5258 ± 593 μg stick -1 , respectively. 3R4F's heightened TPM likely arises from tar, while HTPs' OC concentrations are influenced by vegetable glycerin (2236-2688 μg stick -1 ) and propylene glycol (589-610 μg stick -1 ). During the condensation process, a substantial proportion of OCs in 3R4F smoke underwent significant concentration decreases, in contrast to HTPs, where fewer than half of the examined OCs exhibited notable concentration declines. The HI for tobacco emissions exhibited a marginally higher value compared to tobacco condensate, with variations ranging from 7.92% (HTPs) to 18.6% (3R4F), denoting a minimal differential. These observations emphasize the importance of accurate OC recovery techniques to maintain the validity and reliability of toxicity assessments based on tobacco condensates.
